Carbon Neutral Home

Over the past 5 years I have dramatically reduced my carbon footprint through changes including:

1). 100% use of compact fluorescent light bulbs.

2). Switched to electric power option which relies on 100% renewable energy (Maine Interfaith Power and Light)

3). Installed a 30-tube solar array with an 80 gallon storage tank and three boiler modifications

4). Started using B20 heating fuel(a blend of 20% biofuel with 80% petroleum fuel, by volume) which lowers air emissions and reduces our dependence on foreign oil. My fuel is purchased from Independence Fuel.

5). Burning BioBricks in my Jotul Series 8 woodstove to augment our heating needs. BioBricks produce 1/2 the particulates (smoke) compared with good cordwood and are considered greenhouse gas neutral.

6). Installed appliances which meet or exceed the Energy Star standards. This includes an Asko D1706 dishwasher, a Bosch Nexxt 500 Series washer and dryer, and a Bosch Evolution 500 Series Refrigerator.

7). Use my velomobile for commuting and running errands.

8). Purchased a Toyota Prius.

I purchased the following green tags to offset our remaining carbon emissions:

1). Purchased 6 tons of green tags from Native Energy as part of their CoolHome program.

2). Purchased 12 tons of green tags from Native Energy as part of their CoolDriver program.

Enjoy!
